Softfootball understands that Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior has moved to clarify Josh Acheampong’s long-term role at the club, confirming that the 19-year-old is being developed primarily as a center-back despite his growing reputation for versatility.
Speaking in a recent interview as reported by Fabrizio Romano via his official X account, Rosenior offered strong praise for the academy graduate.

He said:
Liam Rosenior: Josh Acheampong is an amazing talent. He’s got immense potential. I like put them in different position because it improves them. Long term, Josh is a centre-back.
Although Acheampong has featured in several positions this season, including right-back, left-back, and even midfield, Rosenior insisted the long-term vision remains unchanged. It was a firm statement, and one that removed any lingering doubt around the club’s plans for the teenager.
Rosenior also explained his broader developmental philosophy, particularly when it comes to young defenders. By rotating them across different roles, he believes players gain a deeper understanding of space, timing, and decision-making. For Acheampong, that approach has clearly paid off.

Since Rosenior’s appointment in January 2026, Acheampong has enjoyed increased first-team exposure, starting in Chelsea’s 5-1 victory against Charlton.
His composure in possession, reading of danger, and ability to step forward with the ball have not gone unnoticed inside the training ground. There’s a calmness to his game, maybe beyond his age, though he’s still learning.

Rosenior has also been quick to shut down January transfer speculation linking Acheampong with clubs such as Crystal Palace and Bayern Munich. praising the versatile Chelsea defender, stating that he wants him in the club.
Competition remains fierce in central defense, with the likes of Trevoh Chalobah, Wesley Fofana, and Tosin Adarabioyo all vying for minutes. The expected return of Levi Colwill from an ACL injury will only raise the bar. Rosenior admits Acheampong must fight for his chance, but the pathway, clearly, is there.
