Chelsea have strengthened their future defensive ranks after completing the signing of 17-year-old centre-back Alfie Osborne from Hearts, Softfootball reports.

The Blues reached an agreement with the Scottish club for the highly rated Scotland Under-19 international, who has now signed a long-term contract at Stamford Bridge after successfully completing his medical.

The teenage defender is regarded as one of Scotland’s brightest young prospects and is expected to continue his development within Chelsea’s academy before pushing for opportunities with the senior squad in the coming years.

The signing comes during another busy summer for the West London club as they continue to invest heavily in young talent while reshaping their squad for the future.

Chelsea have also suffered a setback in their pursuit of experienced midfielder Granit Xhaka. Sunderland have made it clear that their captain is not for sale after the Switzerland international reaffirmed his commitment to the Black Cats despite interest from the Blues.

Xhaka had been viewed as a potential reunion signing for Xabi Alonso following their successful spell together at Bayer Leverkusen, but Sunderland rejected Chelsea’s opening bid and remain determined to keep the veteran midfielder at the Stadium of Light.

Despite missing out on Xhaka for now, Chelsea have continued to strengthen in other areas, with Osborne becoming the latest exciting young talent to commit his future to the club as the Blues build for both the present and the future.
