Softfootball understands that Karim Benzema is still yet to return to Al-Ittihad’s matchday squad following a recent report about a controversial contract renewal proposal that has sparked tension behind the scenes, as reported by Fabrizio Romano via his official X account.

The 38-year-old Ballon d’Or winner withdrew himself from selection for the Saudi Pro League clash against Al Fateh, and since that announcement, Benzema has faced criticism from fans.

According to multiple reports, the proposal, delivered by Saudi Pro League Director of Football Michael Emenalo, would see Benzema play without a traditional salary. Instead, his earnings would be structured almost entirely around image rights payments. The idea, while not entirely new in football, has not gone down well with the French forward.

Al-Ittihad officials are believed to have little control over the situation. Contract negotiations for high-profile foreign players are centrally managed by the league, leaving the club’s executives unable to directly amend or renegotiate the offer.

This setup has made discussions slow and frustrating, and direct dialogue between Benzema and the club has been limited. Earlier in the season, sporting director Ramon Planes insisted Benzema was keen to stay and fully committed to what he described as a serious long-term project.

However, the timing and restrictive nature of the proposal, reportedly presented just days before the transfer window deadline, have disrupted those plans.

Head coach Sergio Conceição confirmed Benzema’s absence but avoided details.

He said:

You will have to ask the club about Karim Benzema. Everything else is outside my responsibilities.

Since arriving in the Saudi Pro League, Benzema has been one of Al-Ittihad’s most influential figures. He scored 21 goals and provided nine assists in 29 league games last season.

With his contract expiring in June 2026 and no agreement in sight, Benzema is now increasingly viewed as a potential high-profile free agent.

Reports last September already hinted at a possible exit, and recent developments only strengthen that view. Benzema has admitted receiving interest from Europe, and while he once preferred to stay in Saudi Arabia, that now depends on the conditions.
