Bayern’s Perfect Run Ends in Berlin as Union Fight Back for 2-2 Draw

3 Min Read

Bayern Munich’s incredible 16-game winning streak came to an end today, after they were held to a 2-2 draw by Union Berlin at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei. The point keeps Bayern top of the Bundesliga with 28 points and 6 points clear of Leipzig, who are second, but ends their dream of a perfect season.

Softfootball reports that the Bavarians looked sluggish from the start, possibly still feeling the effects of their hard-fought 10-man win over PSG in midweek. Union Berlin sensed an opportunity and pressed early. Ilyas Ansah thought he had opened the scoring with a header, but VAR ruled it out for offside. The hosts kept pushing, and their persistence paid off in the 27th minute. Danilho Doekhi’s low shot from a corner squirmed through Manuel Neuer’s hands and over the line, giving Union the lead thanks to a rare mistake from the veteran keeper.

Bayern hit back before halftime through Luis Díaz. The Colombian showed endless energy, keeping the ball alive on the byline, cutting inside Haberer, and smashing a stunning shot from a tight angle past Frederik Rønnow to level the score.

After the break, Bayern looked for a winner. Harry Kane had a goal disallowed for offside, but Union stayed organised and resilient. In the 83rd minute, Kane’s poor defensive header from a free-kick fell to Doekhi, who calmly finished with his left foot to put the hosts ahead once more.

Just when it seemed Bayern would suffer their first defeat, they found a late equaliser. Nineteen-year-old substitute Tom Bischof delivered a perfect cross, and Kane timed his run brilliantly to glance a header home in stoppage time, marking his 13th league goal of the season, the last coming from Bayern’s 4-1 win over colonge in the DFB Cup. Earlier, in the pregame report, Softfootball predicted an easy 2-nil victory for Bayern, but Union Berlin were determined to cause a major upset to the league leaders and they achieve their aim almost snatching a win.
