Max Eberl has left the door open for Manuel Neuer to extend his stay at Bayern Munich, despite the goalkeeper now being 40 years old, Softfootball reports.

According to a recent update shared by Fabrizio Romano via his official X handle, Eberl stated that a renewal remains possible if Neuer feels ready to continue and if expectations between both parties align. The comments highlight Bayern’s respect for the veteran goalkeeper, who has been a cornerstone of the club for over a decade.

Romano shared:

Bayern could discuss new deal with 40 year old goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, says director Max Eberl: “I can imagine this”. “If Manu is up for it, feels good, is ready, and our expectations of each other fit together, I can well imagine an extension”, told @tzmuenchen.

Neuer, widely regarded as one of football’s greatest goalkeepers and a pioneer of the “sweeper-keeper” role, has maintained a high level of performance even in the later stages of his career. Despite dealing with a calf injury earlier this year, he continues to command Bayern’s defense with authority, leadership, and consistency.

Uncertainty around Neuer’s future has lingered in recent months. While earlier reports hinted at a possible agreement, the situation has remained unresolved, with the German international taking his time before making any final decision.

The latest update from Eberl reflects Bayern’s cautious but respectful approach, balancing the value of Neuer’s experience with the club’s need to plan for the future and integrate younger goalkeeping options.

Neuer’s longevity at the highest level continues to draw admiration from fans and analysts alike, as it remains rare for goalkeepers to perform at such an elite standard well into their 40s.

As discussions continue, the final decision will ultimately rest on whether Neuer believes he can maintain his level and continue contributing to Bayern’s ambitions.
