Softfootball understands that FC Barcelona are reportedly preparing to step up their search for a new defender, with head coach Hansi Flick prioritising the addition of a right-back to provide cover and competition for Jules Kounde. One name under serious consideration is Denzel Dumfries of Inter Milan.

Dumfries left a lasting impression on Barcelona during last season’s Champions League semi-final clash, where his powerful presence on the right flank caused repeated problems for the Catalans.

With a €25 million release clause included in his current contract, Dumfries represents an intriguing and potentially affordable option but there’s a catch. That clause is only valid until the end of July, meaning the clock is ticking fast for Barça if they are serious about making a move.

Despite the growing speculation in the Spanish press, Inter Milan’s sporting director Piero Ausilio has poured cold water on talk of any imminent transfer. Speaking to Football Italia, Ausilio clarified that no official contact has been made by Barcelona regarding Dumfries.

“No, we have not received any communication from them,”

Ausilio said.

“There’s never been anything concrete. It’s true there is a release clause, which we introduced during a tricky period, but I think we did well to protect the club’s interests.

“We renewed his contract at a time when there was a genuine risk of losing him for free. The clause might seem threatening to outsiders, but we’re calm. Inter are relaxed, and Denzel is happy here.”

Meanwhile, Barcelona’s hands appear somewhat tied. With Marcus Rashford’s arrival from Manchester United nearing completion, the club must now prioritize offloading players to free up salary space. The same applies to goalkeeper Joan Garcia, whose registration is also pending La Liga approval.

Softfootball understands that while Dumfries remains on Barcelona’s shortlist, any deal will likely depend on player sales and clearing wage room. Former La Masia talent Xavi Simons is also being tracked, but again, timing and financial constraints could prove decisive.

In short, while Dumfries remains a player of interest, Inter’s confidence and Barcelona’s financial situation suggest a deal is far from imminent. Still, with transfer windows, surprises are always possible.
