Hansi Flick’s Barcelona side achieved a remarkable milestone on Sunday, equalling an 80-year-old club record after their hard-fought 2-1 victory over Real Sociedad at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys. The win not only sent them to the top of the La Liga table but also saw them score in their 44th consecutive match, a feat last achieved in the 1940s under coach Juan José Nogués.
Back then, between 22 November 1942 and 6 February 1944, Nogués’ Barça side managed the same scoring streak, a run that not even Johan Cruyff’s Dream Team or Leo Messi’s golden era could match. Flick’s team has now equalled that record, underlining their attacking consistency and depth.
The match itself was another test of character. Real Sociedad took a shock lead in the 31st minute through Álvaro Odriozola, punishing a rare lapse from the home side. But Barcelona fought back, finding the equaliser just before halftime when Jules Koundé rose highest to nod in a corner from Marcus Rashford.
The second half saw Lamine Yamal making his long-awaited return from injury, coming off the bench to turn the game around. Within minutes of his introduction, the 18-year-old winger beat his man down the flank and sent in a pinpoint cross for Robert Lewandowski, who buried his header in the 59th minute to complete the comeback.

It was a fitting night for Yamal, who was honoured before kick-off as he displayed his second consecutive Kopa Trophy to the fans. Softfootball reported that the player became the first player ever to retain the award for the world’s best U21 footballer. His energy and flair changed the momentum, and though he had a goal ruled out for offside later on, his assist proved decisive.
Barcelona posted a video of the player making the presentation on their official X account.

With the victory, Barcelona move to 19 points from seven games, overtaking Real Madrid at the top of the table. For Real Sociedad, it was another frustrating night as they sit in 17th place with just five points so far.
Beyond the result, this was a night of history. Scoring in 44 consecutive matches is no small feat, and Flick’s Barça have now written their names alongside one of the club’s oldest records with the chance to break it in their next outing.
It was, in every sense, a performance that mixed legacy, youth, and resilience the perfect reflection of this new Barcelona under Hansi Flick.
