Rangers defender Leon Balogun has reiterated his willingness to represent Nigeria at international level whenever he is called upon.
Softfootball reports that the experienced centre-back has not featured for the Super Eagles since coming on as a substitute during Nigeria’s 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against Sao Tome and Principe in June 2022.
Balogun, who has impressed with his performances for Scottish giants Rangers this season, explained that injuries were responsible for his recent absence rather than a decision to retire from international football.
The 36-year-old revealed that he suffered an injury before a previous international break and later experienced a relapse after initially recovering.
I have always been available. I’ve never said that I retired from international football,
Balogun told Brila FM.
The defender added that he remains ambitious and ready to represent the three-time African champions whenever the opportunity arises.
I’m still very much willing and ambitious to represent the national team,
he stated.
Balogun has earned 46 caps for Nigeria and scored once. He was part of the Super Eagles squad at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia and helped the team finish third at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.
