Atlético Madrid Grind Out Late Win as Simeone’s Side Push Their LaLiga Charge Alive

3 Min Read

Atlético Madrid had to work far harder than they probably expected, but Diego Simeone’s men still walked away with a 1–0 win over Getafe, their fifth league victory in a row and another reminder that this team simply refuses to go away quietly.

Softfootball understands that it wasn’t stylish football, not even close, but in a weird way it felt exactly like the type of match Atlético have built their entire identity around, just like we saw against Levante and the UEFA Champions League 3-1 victory against Union Saint-Gilloise

From the opening whistle, Atlético tried to take control. They pushed forward with intent, created early pressure, and almost grabbed the lead when José María Giménez met a cross with a strong header.

Unfortunately for him, the Getafe goalkeeper was alert and pushed it aside. Álex Baena had a half-chance soon after, although he rushed it and sent the ball swerving over the bar. You could already hear a few frustrated sighs in the stadium.

Getafe didn’t look overwhelmed. In fact, they grew into the game as the first half went on. Borja Mayoral had probably their best moment before the break when he sent a header straight at Juan Musso, who didn’t have to move much to save it.

That little spark of confidence carried into the second half, where Mauro Arambarri sent another header wide, drawing a groan from the home fans who were starting to get slightly restless.

As the minutes ticked away, Atlético began to push harder again, but the final pass kept missing. It felt like one of those nights where the ball simply refuses to cooperate. Also, they missed the intensity and pressing of Giuliano Simeone, who recently is tipped to sign a contract extension with Atletico.

Then, out of nowhere, fortune finally swung their way. In the 82nd minute, Giacomo Raspadori drilled a low cutback into the box, and in the scramble that followed, Getafe defender Domingos Duarte accidentally turned the ball into his own net. Atlético’s bench erupted; Getafe’s players could only put their hands on their heads.

Atletico posted a video of the match highlights via their official X account.

The goal wasn’t glamorous, but it didn’t need to be. For Simeone, the result matters far more than the route taken. Atlético have now lost just once in their last eleven matches and are quietly creeping into the conversation near the top.

Getafe, meanwhile, saw their European hopes take another hit with a second straight defeat without scoring — a tough pill to swallow after working so hard throughout the match.
