Aston Villa have wrapped up their first big move ahead of the January transfer window, agreeing to a deal with Brazilian side Grêmio for highly rated winger Alysson Edward.

The 19-year-old, widely seen as one of the bright young prospects coming out of Brazil, is set to become the newest addition to Unai Emery’s project. This was confirmed by transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano via his official X account.

He posted:

Aston Villa agree deal to sign Alysson from Gremio. Here we go!
€10m initial fee plus €2m add-ons for the 19-year-old Brazilian winger to join the club in January.
Alysson will undergo medical and sign at #AVFC by the end of December.

The move is built around a guaranteed fee of €10 million, plus another €2 million in performance-based add-ons that could activate depending on how the teenager settles and performs in England.

Alysson is a left-footed right-winger with serious pace, a sharp touch on the ball, and a relentless attitude in the high press. His numbers for the 2025 Brasileirão season, one goal and two assists in 31 matches, don’t exactly jump off the page, but scouts are really convinced his talent goes way beyond the stats.

Sometimes raw players with the right mentality and coaching turn into something special, and Villa seems to be betting on that path again, just like they did with Morgan Rogers last year.

Softfootball also recently reported that Morgan Rogers recently extended his contract with Aston Villa until 2031.

Alysson is expected to complete his medical and sign all the paperwork before the end of December, meaning he will officially join the Aston Villa team once the window opens in January.

Aston Villa has been in fine form this season, recently defeating Arsenal 2-1 in the Premier League. The club has been trying to stay smart within financial sustainability rules and going for high-potential players who can grow into valuable assets.

This transfer feels like one of those calculated moves, maybe not the loudest headline, but one that could pay off big down the line if Alysson hits the level many believe he can reach.
