Arsenal create more space as Tomiyasu bows out, 2 signings expected soon

Arsenal have confirmed the departure of versatile defender, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Softfootball reports.

According to the club, both parties decided to mutually terminate the existing contract as the Japanese will be out injured till the end of the year. Tomiyasu, who was brought to the Emirates from Bologna had an injury inflicted time at the club. He departs having spent 4 years at the club and played only 6 minutes of football last season due to multiple injuries.

Tomiyasu’s original contract with the Gunners was to run till 2026 but the player will now focus on recovering fully from his injuries and return as a free agent in the market. The 26-year old is suffering from a knee injury, the same injury that kept him out for a long time in 2023. With Tomiyasu’s departure, Arsenal have now freed up another £100,000 as they keep clearing their salary structure ahead of a marquee signing this summer.

Arsenal bid their byes to Tomiyasu in a statement. The statement read:

Unfortunately, injuries have limited Tomi’s time on the pitch in the past two seasons, with the defender making just one substitute appearance last season. It was therefore mutually agreed to end Tomi’s contract in order for him to start a new chapter in his career.

Mikel Arteta’s team have now let 8 first team players leave this summer. The players include – Thomas Partey, Kieran Tierney, Jorginho and loan player Raheem Sterling returned to Chelsea. Nuno Tavares and Marquinhos were sold permanently while Neto also returned to Bournemouth after his loan spell.

Arsenal are keen on adding new players to their squad ahead of the coming season as they haunt for their first PL title in 22 years and first trophy in 6 years. Softfootball confirmed the Gunners are making progress in the pursuit of Swedish striker, Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting Lisbon.

Arsenal have reportedly closed in on securing the services of Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres, who has been touted as a replacement for Kai Havertz.

Gunners were said to have held an interest in bringing Aston Villa number nine Ollie Watkins to the Emirates in January 2025, but a move ultimately failed to materialise.
