Softfootball understands that Jack Grealish has confirmed his 2025/26 campaign is over after undergoing surgery on a stress fracture in his foot, bringing a sudden and frustrating end to what had quietly become an influential spell at Everton.

The 30-year-old midfielder picked up the injury during Everton’s narrow 1-0 Premier League win over Aston Villa. Posting from his hospital bed in a post shared by Everton via their official X account, Grealish shared an honest and emotional update with fans.

He said:

Didn’t want the season to end like this, but that’s football. Gutted. Surgery done, and now all focus is on getting back fit. I know for sure I will come back fitter, stronger and better than before. The support I’ve had since coming to this unbelievable club has meant the world to me. The staff, my teammate and especially the fans have been incredible, and I absolutely love representing this club. I’ll be backing the lads all the way and doing everything I can to get back as soon as possible. Thank you again for all the love, it means so much. UTFT

Jack Grealish, who joined Everton on loan from Manchester City, had rediscovered rhythm at Goodison Park, registering two goals and six assists across 22 appearances. Everton looked calmer with him around.

Manager David Moyes called him a big character and a massive influence, admitting the diagnosis came as a surprise while staff were initially checking a calf complaint. Football can be strange like that, one scan leads to another, and suddenly your season’s gone.

The timing couldn’t be worse. The setback likely ends any hope of Grealish forcing his way into England’s squad for the 2026 World Cup. After last featuring for the Three Lions in October 2024, there had been whispers of a return under Thomas Tuchel. Now, that door looks half-closed.

Everton also face a decision. The club holds a £50 million option to sign him permanently from City this summer, but this injury complicates things a bit. Still, if there’s one thing Grealish has shown before, it’s resilience. He’ll be back. Just not as soon as anyone hoped.
