Tottenham Hotspur manager Thomas Frank has come out strongly in support of his vice-captain Cristian Romero following Spurs’ 2–0 defeat to Manchester United, a match that saw the defender sent off early and leave his side playing with ten men.
Speaking in a video shared by Fabrizio Romano on X handle, Frank made it clear that the red card has not changed his view of Romero’s importance.
“No regrets about making him captain. He’s apologised to his team-mates in the changing room. I think he’s one of the most important players,”
the Spurs boss said.
Frank’s backing comes at a tense moment in Tottenham’s season, with the club battling inconsistency in the Premier League. The manager stressed Romero’s leadership qualities and experience, insisting that one mistake does not define his value to the team.

Away from the immediate fallout of the defeat, Frank also addressed Tottenham’s future planning. According to Softfootball, the manager is keen to keep Mathys Tel at the club beyond this season. Tel has impressed since arriving in North London, and Frank sees him as a key part of Spurs’ long-term project, even with growing interest from other European clubs.
However, when asked about reports linking Tottenham with a surprise move for Andy Robertson, Frank refused to be drawn into transfer speculation. He remained tight-lipped, insisting his focus is firmly on getting the current squad through a demanding run of fixtures.
For now, Frank’s message is clear: stand by his leaders, protect his young talents, and block out the noise as Spurs try to steady the ship.
