Atlético Madrid may not yet fully grasp the level of quality they have acquired with the signing of Ademola Lookman from Atalanta. Softfootball earlier reported the Nigerian forward’s move, and his pedigree speaks loudly for itself.
The 2024 African Player of the Year enjoyed a remarkable spell in Italy, recording 37 goals and 15 assists across two seasons for Atalanta. His contributions were pivotal in delivering the club’s first major trophy in many years, while also cementing his reputation as one of Europe’s most decisive attackers.

On the international stage, Lookman was instrumental in Nigeria’s run to the AFCON 2023 final, delivering crucial goals and assists that carried the Super Eagles through the tournament.
LaLiga goalkeepers have now been warned. With Ademola Lookman’s devastating left and right foot combined with Julián Álvarez’s firepower, Atlético Madrid possess a dangerous attacking duo capable of troubling any defence.
Beyond footballing impact, the signing opens Atlético Madrid to a massive new fan base across Africa, particularly Nigeria. Many African fans are now more likely to follow Atlético’s matches closely, a boost LaLiga will welcome. Lookman also becomes only the second Nigerian to play for Atlético Madrid, after Abass Lawal in the early 2000s.
