Today, 7 January 2026, marks one year since Eric Chelle was appointed head coach of the Nigeria Senior Men’s National Team, the Super Eagles. Chelle was officially announced by the Nigeria Football Federation on 7 January 2025, months after managing MC Oran in the Algerian Ligue 1 Pro.
Since taking charge, Chelle has overseen 16 matches, recording 10 wins, 5 draws, and just 1 defeat, giving him an impressive 62.5% win percentage, Softfootball gathered. Under his leadership, the Super Eagles have scored 34 goals while conceding 15, reflecting a balanced blend of attacking intent and defensive structure.

One of Chelle’s biggest achievements has been successfully qualifying Nigeria for AFCON 2025 and guiding the team through the group stage with authority. The Super Eagles won all three group matches, finishing with a perfect nine points, defeating Tanzania (2–1), Tunisia (3–2), and Uganda (3–1).
However, his tenure has not been without disappointment. Nigeria missed out on qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, losing to DR Congo on penalties in the playoff final, a painful exit that still lingers among fans.
Despite that setback, Chelle’s first year in charge has largely been viewed as a step forward, marked by tactical stability, renewed confidence, and continental progress. As AFCON 2025 moves into the knockout stage, expectations remain high for what the Super Eagles can achieve under his guidance.
