Rayo Vallecano Held by Getafe After Arambarri’s Stoppage-Time Equaliser

4 Min Read

Softfootball understands that a late header from Mauro Arambarri denied Rayo Vallecano a much-needed win as their derby with Getafe finished 1–1 at the Estadio de Vallecas. Jorge de Frutos’ first-half goal had put the hosts on course for victory, but Getafe found a way back deep into stoppage time.

Rayo Vallecano have registered eight draws this season, including two notable results against La Liga heavyweights. They held Real Madrid to a goalless draw and earned a 1-1 draw against Barcelona.

Both sides arrived under pressure. Getafe were looking to stop a worrying run of defeats, while Rayo needed a response after being well beaten by Elche before the winter break. The opening stages reflected that mood.

The first real chance came on the counter. Getafe broke quickly, and Adrián Liso hit a curling effort that forced Augusto Batalla into a sharp save. It woke Rayo up. Not long after, Álvaro García cleverly stepped over a low cross and smashed a shot just wide, Vallecas rising to its feet.

Rayo began to look more comfortable, and they took the lead right at halftime. Unai López floated a searching ball into the area, and Jorge de Frutos stayed calm, watching it all the way before guiding it home for his fifth league goal. David Soria won’t enjoy watching that one back; it slipped through him a little too easily.

After the break, though, the game lost its spark. The tempo dropped, passes went astray, and chances were rare. Both teams managed only one shot on target for most of the second half, and it felt like the match was slowly drifting toward a narrow home win.

Then came the late drama. In added time, Luis Milla delivered a brilliant cross from a set-piece, and Mauro Arambarri rose above everyone to head past Batalla, snatching a point that looked gone moments earlier. It was Getafe’s first real threat in a long while, but it counted.

The draw stretches Rayo’s winless league run to seven matches, even if the point briefly lifts them above three sides on 18 points. Results elsewhere could undo that quickly. They now turn their focus to a Copa del Rey.

For Getafe, the point ends a three-game losing streak and moves them up to 10th place. Not perfect, but after recent weeks, it’ll feel like progress.
