Happy Birthday Gerardo Martino: From Rosario to MLS Glory

3 Min Read

Happy birthday to Gerardo Martino, a man whose journey blends hierarchy, character, stubborn hard work, and a jersey carried with real pride. Some football figures pass through the sport quietly, but Martino left footprints so deep that even time tries to keep up. His influence still ripples through the sport.

Recently Lionel Messi reflected on his emotional bond with Barcelona and the decisions that shaped his career; it’s hard not to think how foundational leadership like Martino’s played a part in defining those moments.

Born on 20 November 1962 in Rosario, Argentina, Martino grew from a sharp midfielder into a football thinker who saw the game differently. He made 505 official appearances for Newell’s Old Boys, a record still untouched, and fans once voted him the best player in the club’s history. The club also took time to wish him a happy birthday via their official X account.

Not bad for a Rosario boy who only wanted to play football. His coaching journey was full of tough choices and honest moments. In 2013 he stepped into the massive job of replacing Tito Vilanova at Barcelona. He finished runner-up in La Liga and the Copa del Rey and still walked away in May 2014.

Then came the Argentina spell; Martino reached two Copa América finals, in 2015 and in 2016, losing both on penalties to Chile before resigning.

He found fresh energy in MLS, guiding Atlanta United from newcomers to MLS Cup champions in 2018 and earning Coach of the Year. Later he led Mexico through highs and lows, including the difficult 2022 World Cup exit.
In 2023, his coaching path would later connect again with Messi at Inter Miami, Lionel Messi, who recently signed a new deal with Inter Miami until 2028, as reported by Softfootball.

On 6 November 2025, Martino returned to Atlanta United on a two-year deal, closing one circle and perhaps opening another. wishing Gerardo Martino a happy birthday and hoping his new chapter brings the same calm wisdom, bold ideas, and steady leadership that have defined his remarkable journey through the game.
