Zinedine Zidane looks set to finally step into the France dugout, with reports strongly indicating that the legendary midfielder will take over as head coach once the 2026 World Cup is wrapped up. Softfootball understands that although nothing has been formally signed yet, Didier Deschamps, who recently led France to a 3-1 victory against Azerbaijan, may not continue beyond 2026.
Sports expert Fabrizio Romano revealed via his official X account that the French Football Federation have already placed Zidane at the top of their list and see him as the natural successor to Didier Deschamps.

The French legend, who had earlier confirmed that he is open to returning to management, is the overwhelming favourite and has held quiet, positive discussions about leading Les Bleus into the next cycle. The reason everything still appears calm and unofficial is largely out of respect; Zidane doesn’t want any announcement to overshadow Didier Deschamps, a man he not only played alongside but also deeply admires.
He tweeted:
Zinedine Zidane remains the clear favorite to become next France head coach after the World Cup. Nothing signed as Zizou wants to respect Deschamps who will only leave the job at the end of July. Federation also fully focused on WC 2026 but Zizou favorite for next chapter.
Deschamps, who has been in charge since 2012, is widely expected to step down at the end of July 2026, closing a historic spell that brought France a World Cup title in 2018 and plenty of consistency at major tournaments. Once he moves on, it seems almost certain that the reins will pass to Zidane, a figure whose leadership, aura and tactical philosophy many believe are perfectly suited for the next chapter of French football.

For now, the FFF is keeping things quiet, but behind the scenes, confidence is high. Zidane has been out of club management since leaving Real Madrid and has patiently waited for the moment to take charge of his national team—a role he has always been linked with but never rushed into.
If all goes according to plan, France could kick off the post-2026 era with one of the greatest football minds of all time guiding them from the touchline.
