Chelsea caused a stir last season when they led the premier league for long periods of the season in their first season under Enzo Maresca.
The Blues failed to complete the job as they fell off the title race but still managed to qualify for the UEFA Champions League. A competition they began this season with a 3-1 defeat against Bayern Munich before beating Benfica 1-0 at Stamford Bridge.
Softfootball takes a look at how Chelsea’s transfer policy in this window will affect their aspirations as likely title contenders this season.

Earlier today, Chelsea official X handle celebrated Moises Caicedo as their player of the season. The defensive midfielder has been immense for the Blues this season and truly deserved his accolade for September.
Moises Caicedo has been voted by our fans as September's Player of the Month!🏅
Well in, Moi. 👏

The former Brighton midfielder played a decisive role as the Blues lifted the UEFA Conference League and against all odds won the FIFA Club World Cup, beating Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain 3-0 in the final.
That was an unbelievable achievement for the Blues and they were expected to build on that this season. So, it was left for the Chelsea hierarchy to get good players to help fortify the team and increase their quality as they were heading into a tougher season which they would compete in the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup.
Chelsea forward signings this summer
Chelsea spent around £300million on attacking talents this summer alone. The spent £44m on 17-year-old winger, Geovany Quenda but allowed him stay at his parent club Sporting Lisbon for a year before joining them when he turns 18.
The Blues also splashed cash on Dario Essugo. They spent £18.4m on the midfielder and like Quenda, the 20-year-old is expected to join Chelsea next summer and current at Las Palmas on loan.
Chelsea used the same tactics to sign Estevao Willian. The Londoners beat competition from Bayern Munich, Paris St-Germain and Manchester City to land the Palmeiras wonderkid in a deal worth £52m. The Brazilian arrived Stamford Bridge after facing Chelseaat the Fifa Club World Cup in July 2025.

Chelsea also splashed £30 million on England international Liam Delap from Ipswich Town and £40 mllion on Alejandro Garnacho from Manchester United. They did not stop there as they coughed out £60 million for Brighton forward Joao Pedro and winger Jamie Gittens from Borussia Dortmund for £48.5m plus a further £3.5m in add-ons.
The above attacking talents were added to the one there already like Cole Palmer, Pedro Neto, and Enzo Fernandez while Raheem Sterling returned from his loan spell at Arsenal where he barely played a game.
Defense and Goalkeeping worry
At a stage last season last season, Chelsea has upto eight first team goalkeeper and after trimming down the squad, Coach Enzo Maresca has trusted Robert Sanchez above any goalie at Stamford Bridge.
Robert has not been a very stable goalkeeper and against Manchester United this season, he lasted just five minutes after he received a needless straight red card. It’s a shame, Chelsea did not consider to strengthen the goalkeeping area and it may be the major reason that would derail them from competing for the league title this season.
Chelsea backline also lacks leadership and unfortunately, they brought in only Jorrel Hato from Ajax. One that could only be considered a future star. The 19-year-old signed a seven-year contract with Chelsea and has struggled for game time under Maresca so far.
Chelsea needed to build on their World title win but they missed the plot in the transfer window by signing too many forward players where they needed a solid goalkeeper and an experience defender in the mode of Thiago Silva who left the club back to Brazil.
