Former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho set to become new Benfica Coach

Benfica are closing in on agreeing a deal with Jose Mourinho to become their new manager, Softfootball reports.

The former Portuguese champions brutally sacked Bruno Lage after Benfica’s 3-2 home loss against Azerbaijan club Qarabag FK in the opening round of the UEFA Champions League.

According to football expert, Fabrizio Romano via his official X handle, Mourinho is keen on a return to management and going back to Portugal after 20 years is perfect for him. He wrote:

Benfica are in advanced talks with José Mourinho after Bruno Lage got sacked overnight! ❤️🤍

Understand Mourinho has opened doors to Benfica move as he wants to return to coaching immediately.

The agreement could be sealed soon.

Interestingly, Mourinho was sacked by Turkish side, Fenerbahçe two days after losing the Champions League play-off against Benfica. The 62-year-old looks set to return to Champions League football as he is expected to join Benfica in the coming days.

Mourinho helped Fenerbahçe lure former Manchester City goalkeeper, Ederson to sign for the club but not there to coach the Brazilian, who is currently the number one for the Turkish side.

Mourinho has previously enjoyed success in Portugal, guiding FC Porto to multiple league titles and winning the UEFA Cup now known as the Europa League and UEFA Champions League before moving on to Chelsea, Real Madrid, Inter Milan, Manchester United , Tottenham, AS Roma and Fenerbahçe.
