Chelsea are planning to make a formal €100 million offer for Atlético Madrid midfielder Pablo Barrios when the January transfer window opens, with new head coach Xabi Alonso identifying the 23-year-old as his preferred target to strengthen the midfield.
Barrios has emerged as a priority for Chelsea following the departure of Enzo Fernández, who completed a €125 million move to Manchester City on Deadline Day. Alonso is understood to be keen on adding another high-quality midfielder to his squad and has identified the Atlético academy graduate as his leading option.
However, any attempt to sign Barrios is expected to face significant resistance from Atlético Madrid.
The Spanish club currently have no intention of selling the midfielder, who remains under contract until 2030 and has a €500 million release clause. Atlético therefore hold a strong negotiating position should Chelsea attempt to test their resolve with a €100 million proposal.
Chelsea’s interest in Barrios comes just two days after the dramatic transfer deadline saga involving Lamine Camara and Monaco.
Softfootball understands that Monaco had agreed a €55 million fee with Chelsea for Camara, while the midfielder had completed his medical, agreed personal terms and was preparing to travel to London after the paperwork had reached the final stages.
For all practical purposes, the transfer was considered effectively done.
However, the situation changed dramatically when Everton returned with renewed interest in Folarin Balogun. Monaco decided that selling Balogun was preferable and chose to prioritise that possibility over completing the already-agreed €55 million transfer for Camara.
Monaco were entitled to reconsider their plans, but the manner in which the situation was handled raised serious questions.
Rather than protecting the existing agreement with Chelsea while negotiations over Balogun continued, Monaco reportedly refused to extend the deal sheet, effectively allowing the Camara transfer to collapse.
The gamble ultimately failed spectacularly.
Balogun’s proposed move to Everton also fell through after the striker decided not to sign the contract despite Monaco and Everton reaching the final stages of the deal.
Monaco therefore went from potentially generating significant funds from their attacking department — or at minimum securing €55 million for Camara — to selling neither player.
Chelsea have now moved on to their next midfield objective, with Barrios emerging as a major target for January.
The proposed €100 million offer would represent a huge commitment from Chelsea, but Atlético’s €500 million release clause and their current reluctance to sell suggest that negotiations could prove extremely difficult.
For Alonso, however, the priority is clear: following Fernández’s departure, Chelsea want to reinforce their midfield, and Barrios has been identified as the player the manager would most like to bring to Stamford Bridge.
