Maresca and Chalobah Reflect on Defender’s Key Role at Chelsea

Trevoh Chalobah’s resurgence has been a major talking point at Chelsea, with both the defender and head coach Enzo Maresca praising his influence since returning from loan.

The 26-year-old academy graduate rejoined the Blues in January after a spell at Crystal Palace and quickly became a cornerstone of the side. His performances helped Chelsea secure Champions League qualification, lift the UEFA Conference League, and claim the FIFA Club World Cup in 2025.

That momentum has carried into the new campaign. Softfootball reports that Chalobah has started all three league matches, anchoring a defence that has kept two clean sheets, including Saturday’s 2-0 derby win over Fulham.

Maresca was filled with praise in a post-match interview that was uploaded via Chelsea’s official website.

“Since he came back in January, he’s been excellent,” Maresca said after the victory. “One of the reasons we achieved so much last season was Trev. In the Club World Cup final against PSG he was outstanding. He’s continued in the same way and we’re very happy with him.”

Chalobah, reflecting on his form, highlighted the importance of rhythm and consistency.

He revealed:

“‘I think that’s the most important thing for any player, just to get that rhythm going and get the consistency,’ reflected Chalobah. ‘For me, it’s just about the team and how I can help the team. ‘That’s important going forward in every game. If we have the mentality to keep clean sheets then that will win you games, and if we keep doing that and striving for that we can go far”

Now a senior figure in the squad, Chalobah has embraced a leadership role.

“I’m not a young boy anymore. It’s about showing personality and helping the new and younger players. Leadership isn’t just about wearing the armband — it’s about guiding each other.”

With Chelsea sitting second in the Premier League heading into the first international break, Chalobah’s presence at the back has been central to their strong start.
