Newcastle United continued their ambitious summer rebuild with the signing of Yoane Wissa from Brentford, marking the Magpies’ sixth major signing of the window. The 28-year-old, arrives at St. James’ Park after a career high performance that saw him score 20 goals in all competitions , thereby making him one of the Premier League’s most reliable strikers, Softfootball reports.

Wissa, who also played for DR Congo at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations where he was named in the Team of the Tournament, now steps into an iconic role at Newcastle, having been handed the prestigious number 9 shirt. previously won by club legends like Alan Shearer, Papiss Cissé, and Obafemi Martins, this carries a huge responsibility, but Wissa says he is ready to embrace it.

In an club statement posted by Newcastle United via its official website, Wissa said;

“It’s a privilege to be the following nine of a lot of historic nines, especially after Callum Wilson and Alan Shearer.
“It’s a really nice shirt as well and I’m looking forward to scoring goals with this shirt.”

Softfootball understands that the player’s signing has sparked excitement among Newcastle fans, many of whom remember the damage Wissa did against them last season, scoring against the club both in the Premier League and the Carabao Cup. Now having him on their side, Lovers of Newcastle will be hopeful his eye for goal and his partnership upfront with fellow summer signing from VFB Stuttgart Nick Woltemade can help push the club back into the premier league race.

The striker’s arrival is also viewed as a strategic move by Eddie Howe, who wanted more depth and experience across the forward line,after last season where injuries and limited squad depth cost the magpies valuable points and games With Wissa’s versatility across the front three, Newcastle believe they’ve added not just a proven scorer but also a player with the work rate and creativity to thrive under Howe’s high-pressing system.
