Nick Woltemade’s rise over the last two years has been nothing short of remarkable. After his breakthrough at Werder Bremen and improvement at VfB Stuttgart, the towering 6’6” striker became one of the Bundesliga’s brightest stars, scoring 17 goals in the 2024/25 season and helping Stuttgart lift the German Cup for the first time since 1997. His form also earned him a senior debut for Germany after excelling at youth level, where he had already built a reputation as a clincal striker.

That incredible journey has now led him to St James’ Park, where he arrives as Newcastle United’s record signing.Softfootball understands that the 23-year-old, who was named Bundesliga Newcomer of the Season and included in the Team of the Season last year, is stepping outside Germany for the first time in his career to face a new challenge.

Woltemade spoke in an exclusive interview with the club’s media after his official confirmation via the club’s official website.

He said:

“I’m really happy to be at this amazing club. From the first contact, I felt like the club really wanted me and had big plans for me.

“It’s a big step in my life to leave Germany but everybody has welcomed me so well and it already feels like family. I have a really good feeling from speaking to the head coach that this is the right place for me to find my best level.”

“I know the stadium from watching games on television – it looks amazing and I know the atmosphere is crazy. I’m really excited to play and start scoring goals here.”

For Newcastle fans, his words will be music to their ears. Eddie Howe has gained a powerful and young striker who not only has the physical presence to cause trouble to Premier League defenders but also the will to thrive at Tyneside. His ability to score in big games was seen clearly in Germany, and that winning instinct could prove invaluable as the Magpies push for greater heights.

The move also represents a personal leap for Woltemade, who leaves his homeland after 14 years with Bremen and Stuttgart. But if his early words are any indication, he is ready to embrace the Toon Army, the atmosphere of St James’ Park, and the challenge of delivering goals on one of football’s biggest stages. Newcastle’s new number nine already feels at home and the excitement is only just beginning.
