Omar Alderete joins Sunderland from Getafe for £10m fee

Sunderland have reportedly landed their latest summer signing, Omar Alderete from Getafe. The 28-year-old Paraguay international joins the Black Cats on a long-term deal as part of the club’s Premier League squad rebuild under Regis Le Bris.

Softfootball understood that the Black Cats are believed to have fended off other competitions for Alderete, who has built a strong reputation in Spain’s top flight and have reportedly struck an agreement over a £10m deal with personal terms also agreed on a contract until June 2029.

Alderete is set to become Sunderland’s 11th signing of the summer and the third defender to arrive, following deals for full-backs Reinildo and former West Ham United ace Arthur Masuaku.

Alderete arrival will take Sunderland summer spending past the £130m mark and is set to become the latest star to swap La Liga for the Premier League this summer, following the likes of Arsenal’s Martin Zubimendi and Everton’s Thierno Barry.

Sunderland were keen to improve their centre-back options this summer, which had not seen any changes since their promotion to the Championship before a deal for Alderete.

The Black Cats have invested heavily to rebolster Regis Le Bris’ squad over the past two months, with the likes of Granit Xhaka, Habib Diarra and Simon Adingra among the marquee signings.

Transfer expert, Fabrizio Romano, writing on his X handle, has revealed that Sunderland’s deal to sign Alderete is now close to completion, with agreement in place over a deal worth £10m. His tweet reads:

“Omar Alderete to Sunderland, here we go! Deal sealed with Getafe for £10m fee.

Contract until June 2029. All done”.

Alderete, who joined Getafe from Hertha Berlin in the summer of 2022, has been a key player for the Madrid club since, making 99 appearances across his three seasons. He helped Getafe finish 13th in La Liga last season.

Now, everything is set for the Paraguayan to continue his career in England, and we’ll see if he establishes himself as a starter under Regis Le Bris’ management.
