Crystal Palace Stun Liverpool to Lift First-Ever Community Shield

Softfootball reports that Crystal Palace made history at Wembley on Sunday, beating Liverpool 3-2 on penalties after a dramatic 2-2 draw to win their first major silverware the 2025 FA Community Shield.

For Palace, it was another landmark moment in what’s becoming a golden era under Oliver Glasner, just three months on from their FA Cup triumph over Manchester City. And just like in May, they had to do it the hard way.

They also posted a video of the team lifting the trophy via their official X account in what has been a historic achievement.

Liverpool’s new boys wasted no time making their mark. Hugo Ekitike opened the scoring with a sharp finish, and Jeremie Frimpong quite possibly unintentionally doubled the lead with a mis-hit cross that somehow sailed in.

But Palace didn’t fold. Jean-Philippe Mateta pounced to pull one back, and Ismaila Sarr levelled things up to set up a tense finale.

With no winner after 90 minutes, it came down to penalties. Liverpool blinked first, Dean Henderson guessed right to deny both Alexis Mac Allister and Harvey Elliott, while Mohamed Salah blazed his effort over.

That left 21-year-old Justin Devenny with the chance to seal the trophy, and he buried it with the composure of a veteran.

For Palace, it’s now 10 games unbeaten in competitive fixtures, and two trophies in just over 90 days. For Liverpool, the defeat extends a poor recent record winless in five, and only one victory in their last seven Community Shield appearances as league champions.

Palace’s celebrations, however, may be tempered by the bigger picture. The club is still appealing to the Court of Arbitration for Sport over UEFA’s decision to drop them from the Europa League into the Conference League. But for the fans in red and blue, those worries can wait this was a day to remember.
