The Turkish Football Federation (TFF) has officially parted ways with Vincenzo Montella following a disappointing run of results that brought his time in charge of the national team to an end. The decision was announced on Friday, October 9, after a meeting of the federation’s executive board.
Montella took charge of Turkey in September 2023 and initially enjoyed a successful spell, guiding the team to the quarter-finals of Euro 2024. He also helped the nation qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, ending a 24-year wait for an appearance at the tournament.
However, Turkey’s recent performances failed to meet expectations. The team exited the 2026 World Cup at the group stage after recording one victory in three matches, before suffering four consecutive defeats in the UEFA Nations League. Those losses came against France, Belgium and Italy, including two defeats to the Italians.
The latest setback was a 3-1 defeat to Italy, which further increased the pressure on Montella and intensified scrutiny of Turkey’s direction ahead of their upcoming international fixtures.
Despite the disappointing conclusion, Montella’s tenure included significant achievements, particularly Turkey’s run at Euro 2024 and their return to the World Cup. His departure therefore marks the end of a period that delivered notable progress before recent results undermined the team’s momentum.

The coaching change also comes amid wider developments within the Turkish federation, which has announced changes to its leadership structure. The TFF has not yet named a successor, leaving uncertainty over who will lead the national team into its next phase.
Turkey are now expected to begin the search for a new head coach as they look to recover from their recent results and rebuild confidence ahead of their next competitive assignments.
