Former Ballon d’Or chief Pascal Ferré has revealed that Real Madrid were left “very angry” after discovering that Vinícius Jr had not won the prestigious award before the ceremony.
Ferré explained that the intention was for the identity of the winner to remain completely secret until the official announcement on the night. According to him, the 2024 ceremony was supposed to be the first time the winner would only be known when the name was announced on stage.

That was supposed to be the first time the winner wasn’t known until it was announced at the ceremony,
Ferré said.
However, he claimed the confidentiality surrounding the result was not respected, with Real Madrid allegedly finding out beforehand that Vinícius would not be crowned the winner.
But from what I know, that secret was not respected. Real Madrid found out and became very angry,
Ferré added.
Vinícius had been widely regarded as one of the leading contenders for the award after a standout campaign with Real Madrid. The Brazilian winger helped the Spanish giants win major silverware and played a key role throughout the season, making the eventual result particularly controversial around the club.
Despite the disappointment, Vinícius’ long-term future at the Santiago Bernabéu appears secure.
