Luka Modrić has called for a proper farewell for Cristiano Ronaldo with the Portugal national team, saying the legendary forward deserves an ending that reflects his extraordinary career.
Speaking about the situation surrounding Ronaldo’s future with Portugal, Modrić described the development as sad, particularly because it is happening in Ronaldo’s own country.
Cristiano is the greatest player in the history of Portugal, and he deserves another farewell and another ending with the national team,
Modrić said.
It’s sad to see this happening to Cristiano in his own country.
Modrić believes the situation can still be resolved and hopes Ronaldo will receive the farewell he deserves, regardless of whether he eventually decides to retire from international football.
“Still, I think they will find a solution, because Cris deserves, whether he retires or decides not to continue with the national team, to have a great farewell that reflects what he deserves,” he added.
So, I don’t know exactly what happened, but I hope the situation gets resolved.
The Croatian captain’s comments come as uncertainty continues around Ronaldo’s relationship with Portugal following recent developments involving head coach Jorge Jesus. Ronaldo has since spoken publicly about what happened, increasing attention on his international future.
Modrić himself recently experienced a difficult moment with Croatia after their defeat to England. The Real Madrid legend admitted that, for the first time in his career, he felt ashamed after a match.
“For the first time, I feel ashamed,” Modrić admitted after the England loss, adding that losing in such a manner and damaging the reputation Croatia had built over the years was unacceptable.
Despite his own disappointment, Modrić has now shown his support for Ronaldo and hopes the Portuguese icon receives the fitting farewell his remarkable international career deserves.
