The goalkeeper explained that the occasion means a lot to both him and his family, while also highlighting his desire to continue developing by learning from the experienced players around him.

For Okonkwo, the opportunity to represent Nigeria carries additional significance given the country’s rich history of goalkeepers, with legendary figures such as Vincent Enyeama and Peter Rufai having previously guarded the Super Eagles goal.

Despite the significance of the moment, Okonkwo revealed that he did not feel overwhelmed by pressure when he received his opportunity with the national team.

Instead, he described the experience as “a super exciting moment” and said he enjoyed every moment of playing for Nigeria for the first time.

Having now had a taste of international football with the Super Eagles, the goalkeeper is already looking ahead and hopes to have more opportunities to represent his country.

I want to play for my country again,

Okonkwo said.

The goalkeeper will now be part of Nigeria’s preparations as the Super Eagles begin their AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign against Madagascar in Uyo.

As he continues his journey with the national team, Okonkwo will be aiming to build on his first experience and establish himself as an important option for the Super Eagles in the years ahead.
