Super Eagles head coach Éric Chelle praised his players for their mentality and commitment after Nigeria came from behind to defeat Madagascar 2–1 in their opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.
Chelle admitted that Nigeria did not produce their best performance, describing the game as neither particularly good nor bad. However, he was pleased with the way the players responded after conceding an early goal and praised their determination to fight back.
The coach said the players showed the right mentality and gave everything for the national team, highlighting their reaction after going behind as an important positive from the match.
Madagascar’s Low Block and Tactical Adjustments
Chelle explained that Madagascar made the game difficult by defending deep and maintaining a compact shape around their penalty area.
Nigeria initially lined up in a 4-4-2 diamond, but Chelle made tactical adjustments to provide more width and create opportunities against the visitors’ low block. He explained that Nigeria needed to use the flanks and deliver crosses to create spaces and openings.
The coach also stressed the importance of players recognising situations during matches and making the right decisions rather than relying entirely on instructions from the technical team.
New Players and Squad Unity
Chelle also praised the unity within the Super Eagles camp, particularly the way established players have helped newcomers settle into the squad.
He explained that new players are quickly welcomed and treated like younger brothers, which he believes has helped create a positive atmosphere within the team.
The coach also confirmed that Samuel Chukwueze’s substitution was tactical. He wanted to introduce more energy and bring in players capable of taking on Madagascar’s defenders in one-on-one situations.
Focus Turns to Guinea-Bissau
With the opening qualifier now completed, Chelle said the Super Eagles must quickly turn their attention to their next assignment against Guinea-Bissau.
The coach wants the team to analyse the Madagascar game, identify the mistakes they made and use those lessons to prepare for a different challenge in their next qualifier.
Chelle also reiterated his commitment to scouting Nigerian players around the world, stressing that he wants to identify all available talent who can contribute to the national team.
He further expressed his affection for the Super Eagles and said he regularly reminds the players of the passion and commitment he has for the national team.
