Chelsea have rewarded Pedro Neto’s strong start to the season and commitment to the club by handing the Portugal international a new long-term contract.
The 26-year-old winger has signed a five-year deal with an option for an additional year and will also receive an improved salary after making a positive impression under new head coach Xabi Alonso.
Neto attracted interest from several Premier League clubs during the summer, including Manchester City. Softfootball reported back in July that Manchester City had joined the race to sign the winger, but the Portuguese international made it clear that his preference was to remain at Stamford Bridge and continue working under Alonso.
The decision has now been rewarded with a fresh contract.
Alonso has deployed Neto in an attacking wing-back role this season, and the tactical adjustment has already produced results. The former Wolverhampton Wanderers star has scored twice in five appearances, continuing the impressive contribution he has made since arriving at Chelsea.
Neto joined the Blues from Wolves for £54m in 2024 and has registered 40 goal involvements since his arrival. His latest renewal also places him among a growing group of important Chelsea players to receive improved terms.
João Pedro, Reece James and Moisés Caicedo have all been handed improved contracts this year, while Cole Palmer signed a new deal in 2024 and reaffirmed his commitment to Chelsea in an interview with the Guardian last season.
Chelsea’s ownership have adopted a strategy of handing players lengthy, incentivised contracts, but Neto’s renewal demonstrates that those long-term agreements do not prevent the club from rewarding players who perform well. Further contract renewals are also expected to be announced soon.
Neto commitment contrasts with Enzo Fernández situation
Neto’s determination to remain at Chelsea contrasts sharply with the situation involving Enzo Fernández, who eventually joined Manchester City for £125m during the closing hours of the summer transfer window.
Fernández was not offered a new contract after initial discussions had taken place. The Argentina midfielder had raised questions over his future in March after criticising the departure of Enzo Maresca as head coach in January.
His comments were followed by speculation over a potential move to Real Madrid after Fernández expressed a desire to live in the Spanish capital. Chelsea responded by banning him for two games.
Although Madrid subsequently played down their interest, Fernández continued to push for a new challenge. Manchester City, who appointed Maresca as Pep Guardiola’s replacement, eventually emerged as his strongest suitors.
Chelsea were prepared to keep the midfielder if their valuation was not met, but ultimately concluded that selling him represented the better long-term decision.
There was reportedly disappointment within the club over Fernández’s conduct and leadership during a difficult period, particularly after Chelsea finished 10th and missed out on European qualification.
Chelsea sacked Liam Rosenior in April before announcing Alonso as his replacement in mid-May. The club were initially willing to reintegrate Fernández into the squad, but the midfielder is understood to have submitted a written transfer request.
It is also understood that Fernández informed Chelsea he had been in contact with a former coach, believed to be Maresca, at the end of last season and during the transfer window.
The Stamford Bridge hierarchy eventually concluded that Fernández’s relationship with his teammates had been damaged by his public comments. His representatives have been approached for comment.
Sources have rejected suggestions that Chelsea were forced or bullied into selling Fernández. Instead, Neto’s renewal is viewed internally as further evidence that key players remain committed to the project under Alonso and will be rewarded for their performances and loyalty.
The Portuguese winger’s new contract therefore represents more than just recognition for his form. It also underlines Chelsea’s desire to retain players who are fully invested in the club’s long-term project.
