Softfootball can confirm that João Cancelo has completed the formal steps to return to Barcelona on a permanent basis, with the Portuguese full-back set to sign a three-year contract with the Catalan giants.
The 32-year-old has returned to Barcelona as a free agent after mutually terminating his contract with Al Hilal. Recent reports confirm that Cancelo has already arrived in Barcelona to finalize the move, with his agreement running until June 2029.
The transfer marks Cancelo’s third spell at Camp Nou. His first came during the 2023-24 season when he joined from Manchester City on loan, before returning to the club on another temporary deal from Al Hilal in January 2026.
During his latest spell, Cancelo played an important role under Hansi Flick and helped Barcelona secure another La Liga title. His ability to operate on either flank made him particularly valuable to the German coach.

The permanent return also gives Cancelo the opportunity to establish himself at Barcelona after two previous loan spells, having made it clear that he wanted to continue his career in Catalonia.
With the formalities now completed, Cancelo is ready to begin his third chapter at Barcelona and compete for major honours under Flick.
