Former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has criticised the club’s decision to sell Scott McTominay to Napoli, insisting the Scotland international still had plenty to offer at Old Trafford. Softfootball gathered that the Norwegian believes the midfielder’s leadership, commitment and understanding of the club’s culture made him an invaluable member of the squad.
McTominay, a product of United’s academy, completed a £25 million move to Napoli last summer after club executives reportedly sanctioned the transfer to help meet Financial Fair Play requirements.
Since arriving in Italy, the midfielder has impressed with a series of strong performances, further fuelling debate over whether United made the right call.
Solskjaer admitted he was pleased to see former players such as Bruno Fernandes, Harry Maguire and McTominay performing well, but confessed he was disappointed the club allowed the midfielder to leave.
“I’m upset that we let him go,” Solskjaer said, pointing to McTominay’s crucial goals and influence during the previous campaign. The former United boss believes the midfielder’s passion, professionalism and deep connection to the club were qualities that should have been retained as the team continues its rebuilding process.
