Victor Boniface has been named in Bayer Leverkusen’s squad for their UEFA Champions League encounter against Atletico Madrid after recovering from a thigh injury.
The Nigeria international has been sidelined since suffering the injury while on international duty last November. However, Softfootball understands that the 24-year-old has now made enough progress to return to the squad for the European fixture.
Boniface travelled to Madrid with his Leverkusen teammates on Monday as the Bundesliga champions prepare for another crucial Champions League test.
Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso confirmed the striker’s return, describing his inclusion in the squad as positive news for both the player and the club. Alonso said:
Victor Boniface can go on the UCL trip to Madrid with the team. He is getting better and better and he will be in the squad.
The coach added that Boniface is feeling good and expressed his delight at seeing the striker back with the team.
Boniface has enjoyed a strong campaign so far, scoring eight goals and providing one assist in 15 appearances across all competitions.
His return gives Alonso another attacking option as Leverkusen continue their European campaign.
