Bayer Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface has experienced a setback in his recovery from a thigh injury sustained while on international duty back in November.

The Nigeria international has remained sidelined since picking up the issue, with his return to full fitness now facing further delay.

Softfootball reports that Leverkusen confirmed the setback ahead of Sunday’s friendly against regional side Rot-Weiss Oberhausen. The club said:

A small step backwards in the rehabilitation process,

offering little further detail on the exact nature of the latest complication in Boniface’s recovery timeline.

Boniface had returned to training with the squad briefly before Christmas, raising hopes he could feature against Borussia Dortmund next weekend, though that target now appears unlikely given the fresh setback.

His return date remains unclear at this stage, leaving Leverkusen without one of their key attacking options for the foreseeable future.

The striker has still managed to contribute eight goals and one assist in 15 appearances across all competitions for Die Werkself this season, underlining his importance whenever fit and available for selection.
