Fenerbahce manager Jose Mourinho has admitted he should have left AS Roma immediately after guiding the Italian club to UEFA Europa League success, Softfootball reports.
The Portuguese tactician reflected on his time in the Italian capital, revealing he now regrets remaining at the club after their triumph in Budapest. Mourinho eventually parted ways with Roma after being dismissed during the following season.
Speaking in an interview with Il Corriere dello Sport, the former Chelsea, Inter Milan and Real Madrid manager criticised the state of modern football and insisted winning the Europa League would have been the ideal moment to walk away.
Turning his attention to Fenerbahce, Mourinho admitted he is unhappy with his side’s current position despite welcoming the opportunity for his players to rest during the league break. He stressed that improvement will depend on the players raising their performance levels in the second half of the campaign.
The 62-year-old also claimed he has witnessed unusual situations during his time in Turkish football that he had never encountered elsewhere in his long managerial career. Nevertheless, Mourinho expressed confidence in the quality of his squad and coaching staff, insisting the club provides the right environment for success and expecting a much stronger showing after the winter break.
