Fenerbahce coach Jose Mourinho has dismissed reports suggesting he wants Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City relegated from the Premier League amid their ongoing financial charges case.
City continue to face the possibility of severe punishment, including potential fines and points deductions, following a lengthy investigation into alleged financial breaches spanning more than a decade.
Softfootball has learned that Mourinho addressed the speculation directly in an interview with Turkish outlet Fanatik.
He said:
I want to win, but I want to win cleanly and fairly. If I can’t win cleanly, I’d rather lose. He won six trophies and I won three, but I won fairly and cleanly.
Mourinho went on to clarify his relationship with Guardiola remains strong despite the rivalry between them on the touchline. He added:
Pep and I worked together for three years, we know we love each other. It is not true that I want them to be relegated, what is true is that I want justice.
The Portuguese coach closed by drawing on his own experience with financial fair play issues during his time at Roma, insisting his stance comes from principle rather than personal animosity.
