Former Real Madrid forward Pedja Mijatovic has questioned the mentality of the current Los Blancos squad, blaming a loss of hunger for their inconsistent La Liga campaign.

Speaking to Cadena SER, the Montenegrin pulled no punches on where he thinks the problem lies. Softfootball reports that his comments come as Madrid continue to struggle for consistency under Carlo Ancelotti this season.

He explained:

I see a team that is more mentally fragile.

The main problem this season is precisely the greatest virtue of last year, this mental strength that the team had.

Mijatovic went further, suggesting the squad’s success in recent years has bred a dangerous kind of comfort, telling Cadena SER:

This squad is less hungry because they have won everything they could have won.

All this context has made them comfortable, and comfort in football is a major problem that kills you.

The former striker even called for Ancelotti to shake things up by showing more anger toward his players.

He stopped short of calling for the Italian’s job, but made clear something has to change if Madrid want to turn their season around.
