New Manchester United manager, old comparisons — and Ruben Amorim wants none of it as he begins one of the toughest jobs in football.
Ahead of his first game in charge against Ipswich, the Portuguese coach addressed inevitable parallels to countryman Jose Mourinho, telling the club’s website:
He sent me a message, it’s a big club, lovely club with lovely people, and he’s correct, it still is. I am a different guy. I’m different from Mourinho. He was European champion, I am not.
Amorim framed the distinction as generational rather than personal, adding:
Football is different nowadays, I think I am the right person for this moment. I am a young guy and I try to use this to help my players.
He also referenced how Portuguese coaches have proven themselves at the highest level in recent years, positioning himself within that broader tradition while insisting his own path will look entirely different from what came before him at the club.
