Algeria and Austria face a decisive Group J encounter at Kansas City Stadium on Sunday, with both teams aiming to secure qualification to the last 32 of the 2026 World Cup.

The Fennecs revived their campaign with a historic 2-1 comeback victory over Jordan, ending a long wait for a World Cup win after conceding first.

Algeria currently sit third in the group on three points, level with Austria but behind on goal difference. A victory would guarantee qualification as group runners-up, although finishing second could set up a difficult last-32 meeting with European champions Spain.

Austria have impressed despite suffering a 2-0 defeat to Argentina in their second match. Ralf Rangnick’s team struggled to break down Lionel Messi’s disciplined side but remain in a strong position after defeating Jordan in their opening fixture.

With both nations separated by goal difference, Sunday’s clash promises to be a high-pressure battle.

Team News

Algeria will be without Mohamed Amoura, increasing the responsibility on Riyad Mahrez, who provided an assist in the win over Jordan.

Manchester City defender Rayan Ait-Nouri is expected to continue, while Nabil Bentaleb could come into midfield.

Austria may make attacking changes after registering only one shot on target against Argentina. Marko Arnautovic could be handed his first World Cup start at the age of 37 after two substitute appearances.

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka is also pushing for inclusion after switching his international allegiance to Austria.
