Aston Villa have opened talks with Flamengo over the potential signing of Brazilian right-back Emerson Royal as the club looks to add depth and quality to their defensive options.
Softfootball understands that Villa have identified Emerson as a suitable backup for Matty Cash and have made initial contact with the Brazilian side regarding a possible transfer. The Premier League club’s reported offer matches the fee Flamengo paid to sign the defender permanently from AC Milan in July 2025.
Emerson Royal has enjoyed a solid spell back in Brazil after returning from Europe, where he previously represented clubs including Tottenham Hotspur and Barcelona. Since joining Flamengo, the 26-year-old has made around 40 appearances, offering experience, physical strength, and attacking ability from the right side of defence.

Flamengo are now considering the proposal as they assess their financial position following recent player sales. While the Brazilian club value Emerson’s contribution, the offer could provide an opportunity to balance their squad and finances.
For Aston Villa, the move fits their approach of adding experienced players capable of competing immediately while maintaining squad depth across multiple competitions. Emerson’s Premier League experience is also viewed as an advantage as Villa continue building under their current project.
Negotiations remain ongoing, with both clubs expected to continue discussions before a final decision is reached on the Brazilian defender’s future.
