Legendary Real Madrid and Spain defender Sergio Ramos has been linked with a surprise move to Egyptian giants Zamalek.
Softfootball understands that Zamalek have confirmed talks to sign the Real Madrid legend, although the deal remains difficult due to the player’s high salary demands. Ramos is currently one of the biggest free agents on the market, and his name has attracted attention from clubs in the Middle East and Africa.
Zamalek are said to be long-term admirers of the former Spain international. Talks about a possible transfer first became public around the time of their CAF Super Cup final victory over rivals Al Ahly at the end of September.
Zamalek media coordinator Ahmed Shawky has since confirmed that the club were offered the chance to sign Ramos. However, he admitted that the financial side of the deal remains a major obstacle.
“Some agents and mediators offered the possibility,” Shawky told ESPN.
Of course, Sergio Ramos is a fantastic player who won everything with Real Madrid and Spain. He would be a massive player for any side in the Middle East or Africa,
he added.
Shawky explained that while the move would be a huge statement for Zamalek and Egyptian football, there is nothing concrete at the moment because Ramos is still highly valued financially.
It would be a massive boost for Egyptian football, and more prestige for Zamalek and the league if we can get the deal done,
he said.
His comments come shortly after Zamalek board member Hany Shoukry also admitted that talks had taken place with Ramos.
According to Shoukry, the defender welcomed the interest and was open to playing in Egypt, but the financial demands made the deal difficult to complete.
For now, Zamalek’s interest remains alive, but signing a player of Ramos’ profile would require a major financial breakthrough.
