Morocco secured a valuable 1-0 victory over Scotland at the FIFA World Cup, with Ismael Saibari’s brilliant early goal separating the two sides and keeping Scotland’s knockout-stage hopes hanging in the balance.
Scotland entered the match knowing a positive result would put them in a strong position to reach the next round, but they made the worst possible start. Just 70 seconds into the game, defensive hesitation allowed Saibari to break through and fire a powerful finish into the net, giving Morocco an immediate advantage.
Steve Clarke had adjusted his lineup by deploying Kieran Tierney in midfield to help contain Morocco captain Achraf Hakimi, but the plan was disrupted almost instantly as Morocco exposed gaps in the Scottish defence.
Softfootball understands that the African champions, who impressed with a draw against Brazil in their previous match, controlled much of the contest with greater possession and attacking quality. However, they struggled to put the game beyond Scotland as the Tartan Army remained competitive.
Scotland grew into the match and nearly equalised before halftime when John McGinn found space at the back post but failed to convert his chance. After the break, Clarke’s side pushed forward, with McGinn and Scott McTominay both appealing for penalties, but the referee dismissed their claims.

The defeat leaves Scotland’s knockout hopes alive, with qualification still possible ahead of their final group match against Brazil. Morocco, meanwhile, continue to strengthen their position with another impressive tournament performance.
