Marc Cucurella has spoken candidly about his decision to leave Chelsea for Real Madrid, describing the transfer as a career-defining opportunity that happened with remarkable speed.
The Spanish defender completed a £52 million move to the Santiago Bernabéu on June 15, ending his successful spell at Stamford Bridge despite reported interest from Barcelona and Atlético Madrid.
As gathered by Softfootball, Cucurella revealed that the deal was finalized in just 36 hours after Real Madrid made their intentions clear.
He explained:
The transfer to Real Madrid happened very fast. It took 36 hours. I was so happy. They called me in the morning and told me that the clubs had agreed everything and asked if I wanted to go. I had no doubt. It was a big step for my career.
Cucurella admitted that leaving Chelsea was not an easy decision, stressing his gratitude to the club and its supporters. However, he felt the opportunity to return to Spain and join one of the world’s biggest clubs was impossible to ignore.

The defender also revealed that newly appointed Real Madrid manager José Mourinho played a significant role in convincing him to make the move. In his words,
I spoke to José Mourinho. He told me he wants to work with me and that gave me confidence. When a coach like Mourinho calls you, that’s very special and very important.
Addressing criticism from some Barcelona supporters, Cucurella remained firm in his stance, insisting he is delighted with his choice and eager to begin a new chapter in Madrid under Mourinho’s leadership.
