Michael Carrick has reacted calmly to the pressure of returning to Manchester United as head coach, offering supporters an encouraging first insight into his mindset after officially taking charge of the club, Softfootball reports.
The 44-year-old, who signed a two-year contract on Friday 22nd May 2026, becomes United’s first British managerial appointment in more than a decade following several disappointing eras at Old Trafford.

Carrick remains one of the club’s most respected modern figures after spending 12 years as a player with the Red Devils, winning multiple major honours alongside former teammate Wayne Rooney.
During an interview released on the club’s official YouTube channel, Rooney asked Carrick how he felt about stepping into one of football’s most demanding jobs. His response immediately caught attention among supporters.
“It feels pretty natural,” Carrick said calmly, a reaction many fans viewed as reassuring given the intense scrutiny surrounding the position.
The former England midfielder famously helped United win the 2016 FA Cup Final against Crystal Palace during the final season of his playing career.

he said:
It feels big on the outside but when you’re in it, it just feels [shrugs shoulders]…Even though it’s different, the building’s different, some of the people are different, it’s kind of what you get used to from 20 years ago since I signed.
So it’s all I’ve kind of known, really. So it’s a bigger role than what I’ve had before but actually it just feels like a natural step, to be fair. It’s nice to be here. A lot of responsibility but it’s good. I’m really enjoying it.
