Celta Vigo will head into the final round of the La Liga season knowing that victory over Sevilla on Saturday evening would officially secure European football for next season.

Claudio Giraldez’s side have exceeded expectations during an impressive campaign, currently sitting sixth in the table with 51 points from 37 matches. With seventh-placed Getafe trailing by three points and significantly behind on goal difference, Celta remain firmly in control of their Europa League destiny heading into the decisive clash at the Municipal de Balaidos.

Despite their strong overall season, home form has been a concern for Os Celestes. Back-to-back defeats against Levante and Villarreal exposed vulnerabilities at Balaidos, where Celta have struggled for consistency throughout the campaign. However, their latest outing offered encouragement after Williot Swedberg’s early strike earned a valuable 1-1 draw away at Athletic Bilbao.

Sevilla arrive with far less pressure after successfully pulling clear of relegation danger in recent weeks. Luis Garcia’s men secured survival thanks to a strong late-season run that included three consecutive victories before narrowly losing 1-0 to Real Madrid in their most recent fixture.

Although Sevilla have shown flashes of quality, defensive instability has undermined their campaign, with 59 league goals conceded — one of the worst records in the division. Celta will hope to take advantage once again after winning the reverse fixture earlier in the season.

Sevilla has however, on their official X handle a photo of the squad warming up on the training pitch as the La Liga season nears its end.

With European qualification on the line and a passionate home crowd expected in Vigo, Saturday’s contest promises to be one of the most significant matches of Celta’s season.

Team News

Celta Vigo remain without Carl Starfelt due to a back injury, while Miguel Roman is also unavailable. Williot Swedberg is expected to keep his place in attack after scoring against Athletic Bilbao.

Sevilla will be missing Manu Bueno and Marcao through injury, while Juanlu Sanchez serves a suspension following an accumulation of yellow cards. Neal Maupay and Akor Adams are expected to lead the visitors’ attack.

Celta Vigo have far more riding on the encounter and should approach the match with greater urgency and intensity. Sevilla’s defensive struggles could prove costly against a motivated home side chasing European qualification.
