Chelsea are heading into a crucial FA Cup clash with Leeds United, and all eyes are now on interim boss Calum McFarlane as he steps in to steady the ship after a turbulent period at Stamford Bridge.

With pressure mounting following their recent struggles including a heavy defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion the focus has now shifted fully to this must-win encounter.

Speaking ahead of the game as reported by chelsea football club via youtube channel, McFarlane made it clear where his priorities lie, choosing not to dwell on past failures but instead channel all energy into the upcoming fixture against Leeds United.

He said:

It’s not my place to say what’s gone wrong or what’s gone right. My full focus is on Leeds. We’ve got a massive game on Sunday, and all I am thinking about is Leeds as a team their weaknesses, strengths, our strengths, our weaknesses, and how we’re going to prepare for that game. That’s literally all my focus.

Despite being pressed on Chelsea’s poor run of form, the interim boss remained composed, insisting improvement must come through performance rather than public analysis.

He added:

The performance against Brighton wasn’t good enough. We know that. It’s about trying to figure out the reasons why from a technical and tactical perspective and making sure the group are in a better place to execute the game plan on Sunday.

There has been talk of dressing room issues and a possible disconnect between players and previous management, but McFarlane refused to fuel speculation, instead emphasizing unity within the squad.

He explained:

We haven’t had a clear-the-air meeting. We’ve got the group focused for Sunday, spoken about the game plan and how we’re going to approach it. What’s gone on in the past doesn’t need to be spoken about. Everything is geared towards Sunday.

On the mentality of the players something many believe has been a major factor in Chelsea’s struggles he acknowledged that improvement is needed across all areas.

He stated:

There isn’t any one thing that’s more important. Technical, tactical, physical, psychological they’re all important. We need to make sure we’re right in every area for the game on Sunday.

The FA Cup semi-final at Wembley represents a massive opportunity for Chelsea to salvage their season, and McFarlane admitted the occasion has lifted spirits within the squad.

He said:

Everyone’s excited. The whole group, the whole club. It’s a massive game, a great opportunity to get to an FA Cup final. It’s why you do the job we do.

He also addressed questions about player responsibility, making it clear that accountability lies with those on the pitch.

They’re on the pitch. They’re top players that can perform at a really high level and that hasn’t happened for whatever reason. They’ll take their responsibility in that, of course, but you’ve got to adapt, move on, and be ready for the next challenge and that’s Leeds.

Team news brought a mix of hope and concern, as key players like João Pedro and Cole Palmer remain doubts but could feature, while another injury blow has ruled out a young talent for the rest of the season.

They trained and they’re in a good place. We’ve got another day to assess them and we’ll make a call after that. We’re hopeful.
