England manager Thomas Tuchel has addressed one of the biggest talking points ahead of England’s upcoming clash with Uruguay his decision to leave out Trent Alexander-Arnold while handing a call-up to Ben White.
Speaking in a press conference posted by Beanymansports via their youtube channel ahead of the international fixture, Tuchel admitted the call was not an easy one, but insisted it was based purely on football reasons and overall squad balance.
Explaining the decision, Tuchel said:
“It’s just a choice. It’s a sportive choice and a difficult choice and maybe a hard choice and maybe to a certain degree maybe unfair, but these choices have to be made.”
He went on to explain why White got the nod ahead of Trent:
“The choice was for Ben White because I saw him play here in the final in the cup final against Manchester City. He played the Champions League match I think before and was straight away back to his old self. It was the chance for me to meet him in person to see how he interacts with the group.”
Tuchel also made it clear that England’s right-back battle is now one of the most competitive areas in the squad, with Tino Livramento and Djed Spence also pushing strongly for inclusion.
On Trent’s omission, he added:
“I think I know what Trent can give us, so the choice was for Ben to call Ben up and for Tino Livramento on the right side, to stick with the guys who actually had had good camps with us in September, October, November. They also need the minutes.”
He continued:
“There are a lot of players in this position, Djed Spence as well who fight also for a ticket, so I didn’t want to leave them out.”
Tuchel acknowledged that leaving out a player of Trent’s profile would naturally spark debate, but insisted the player has been spoken to directly.
“I know that it creates noise when you leave a player like Trent out and yeah, we had a call. I tried to explain the situation, but he just has to accept it.”

Interestingly, the decision comes at a time when Trent is beginning to build momentum again at club level. Trent Alexander-Arnold Marks First La Liga Assist as Real Madrid Find Fresh Rhythm, offering a timely reminder of the quality he still brings in possession and attack.

His recent performances have also earned praise in Spain, with Arbeloa Hailing Trent as Key Man in Real Madrid Title Push, underlining just how highly he is valued at club level despite his latest England setback.
Softfootball reported that Tuchel’s decision reflects a wider strategy rewarding players who have remained active in recent camps, while also testing squad depth in one of the most competitive positions in the squad.
With England now preparing to face Uruguay, the spotlight will be firmly on the players selected and just as much on Trent, who now faces the challenge of forcing his way back into contention.
