Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso has revealed that Victor Boniface is closing in on his return from injury but stopped short of confirming an exact comeback date.

The Nigerian striker has been sidelined since suffering a thigh injury while on international duty in November, forcing him to miss several important matches for the Bundesliga champions.

Boniface was initially expected to return earlier this year, but a setback delayed his recovery and extended his spell on the sidelines. Despite that, Alonso is optimistic the 24-year-old is making steady progress and could soon rejoin full training with the rest of the squad.

Providing an update on the striker’s condition, Alonso said:

Maybe next week, but only maybe. There is still a question mark. He is well on the way to feeling better. After that, he needs training time.

The Nigerian has scored eight goals in 15 appearances across all competitions this season, underlining his importance to Bayer Leverkusen’s attack. Softfootball understands the club will avoid rushing Boniface back to ensure he returns at full fitness.
